Demi Lovato is about to take off on her upcoming world tour, and she’s already making headlines for the tour she hasn’t even begun just yet. The 22-year-old singer is no stranger to making choices that sometimes confuse her fans and that are considered occasionally controversial, and her choice for her new concert is no different. She’s not having a warm-up band or other musical opening act when the show starts. She’s having a motivational speaker come to her show and warm up the crowd.

Lovato made the announcement on Friday on her Facebook page, stunning her fans and no doubt making people wonder what made her decide to forgo a musical warm-up and opt for a motivational speaker instead.

“Spencer West is not only a really great friend of mind, but a huge inspirational speaker. After I spent some time around him and realized what an amazing person he is and how incredible he is at speaking, I decided to bring him on tour,” she said of her new opening act.

West is a motivational speaker who lost both his legs at a very young age. He’s going to warm up her crowd by telling them about his life and what he’s had to overcome since losing both legs. Lovato thinks very highly of West, and she has since she met him in East Africa. They were both doing work in the country with Free the Children, an organization that helps empower youth and help them break out of the lifestyle and ruts in which they were born. They quickly became friends while working together, and they plan on continuing their friendship all over the world as he opens up her show for her in a different city almost every night.

“This is a different kind of tour and one of the things that makes it so special is my friend, Spencer. I’m so honored to have him on tour with me sharing his beautiful and empowering message with all of us,” she said of her friend.
